ROCKBUSTER SPRINGS INTO LIFE ON ONION PROJECT

Proving it's versatility once again, a Broons BH-1220 Rockbuster has been put to good use crushing over 5000m3 of limestone rubble with the Mid Murray Council in South Australia.

The $2m development by Rivapak Onions Pty Ltd involved the construction of a processing and packaging shed along with associated civil works. Utilising the local workforce, the Mid Murray Council was awarded the earthworks contract, including the supply and placement of base course rubble for the shed pad, hard stand areas and internal roads.

Processing material up to 450mm minus, the Rockbuster comfortably handled the pit run oversize, reducing it to a nominal 50mm minus with single pass crushing and at the rate of up to 120m3 per hour!

Driven by a powerful Caterpillar 3306TA Diesel engine, the Broons Rockbuster is Australian designed and built. Delivered to site by either semi trailer or low loader, the Rockbuster can be up and running within two minutes of arriving on the job - quicker than any other portable crusher available on the market!

The hammermill action of the BH-1220 Rockbuster enables the production of a more angular particle well suited for road base, unlike that experienced with jaw or cone crushers. Broons have a fleet of late model Rockbusters available for hire in their Australia wide fleet.

Broons' Manager for Market Development, Mr. Stuart Bowes said recently, "There are a number of so called portable crushers in the market, although most are not really that portable when it comes to shifting them between jobs and setting them up ready to start crushing. Many are grossly over dimensional and overweight and priced well above the Rockbuster".

By using the Rockbuster efficiently, at least one complete cycle can be removed from the crushing process as the crushed rubble can be laid straight out on the job without the need to stock pile in the pit then reload into trucks for delivery to site.

"BROONS BH-1220 ROCKBUSTER IT'S A LOAD OF OLD RUBBISH"

Scandinavian environmental laws are some of the most stringent found anywhere in the world and an Aussie invention is marking its mark in Norway.

Delivered during 1997, the BH-1220 Rockbuster fitted with a 200kW Caterpillar 3306TA diesel engine and manufactured by Adelaide firm Broons Hire (SA) Pty Ltd, has proven more than capable at reducing the massive volume of industrial hard and soft waste delivered daily to the refuse centre in Arnes, north of the Nordic capital, Oslo.

Using the Rockbuster is use to crush waste in layers after spreading across the landfill, results have indicated significant improvements in the potential lifespan of landfills simply by compressing more "crushed" refuse into the same space. While specialist landfill compactors produce some benefits, often they are not fully realised as refuse is not being properly sorted and treated before compaction resulting in costly wasted capacity.

Hard materials such concrete and timber produce a bridging effect in landfills, preventing heavy compactors from fully compressing the refuse beneath, leaving potential weak zones that present problems down the track when considering future development of the site.

Broons have this problem answered also, by recommending the application of their massive 13.8 tonne BH-1300 "Square" Impact Roller, proven to overcome even the most difficult density problems. With 50kJ of energy in each blow, the "Square" Impact Roller is highly productive at around 1500m2 per hour.

When used on the landfill, the Broons BH-1220 Rockbuster is towed by a mid range tracked dozer at slightly higher speed than when used for its original purpose of crushing rock. "The hammer shaft rotating at close to 200kph finds little resistance from the refuse hence the higher travel speed and increased productivity", said Stuart Bowes, Manager for Market Development with Broons.

"Whist the primary objective of sending the Rockbuster to Norway was to treat refuse, work has been done crushing rock on forest haul roads with great success", Mr. Bowes went on to say, "...this looks like presenting further export opportunities for our Rockbuster".

Celebrating 25 years in crushing and compaction Broons are proud to boast over 75 Rockbusters in operation throughout the world with more than 40 units in Australia and 18 units alone in Southern Africa.

"NEW ROCKBUSTERS BREAK NEW GROUND"

RB - Boonah 1.jpg (10764 bytes)

Internationally recognised equipment manufacturer, Broons Hire (SA) Pty Ltd, has recently added three new BH-1220 Rockbusters to their hire fleet complimenting their already unique array of compaction and crushing plant including the world renown BH-1300 "Square" Impact Roller. Designed and built by Broons in Australia, the BH-1220 Rockbuster is a proven performer in the competitive rock crushing market, winning international acclaim both in Australia and abroad.

"Two units have been allocated to compliment our existing hire business in New South Wales and Queensland while a third machine has been put to use on forest haul road construction in Tasmania", said a confident Stuart Bowes, Manager Market Development for Broons. "In addition to our new Rockbusters, we've remanufactured several older units from the ground up, returning them to service in as new condition".

Powered by a reliable Caterpillar 3306TA diesel engine and towed at 0.5km/hr, the BH-1220 Rockbuster is capable of handling up to 500mm infeed oversize pit run rubbles, producing 40mm minus graded crushed rock suitable for sub-base and basecourse pavement layers at the rate of 120m3 per hour, on some materials.

Over many years, Local Government and State Road Authorities have found considerable benefits in using the Broons BH-1220 Rockbuster, rehabilitating worn pavements and tidying up unsightly oversize rock discarded to the side during construction and maintenance operations.

Improved operation and maintenance of the latest BH-1220 Rockbuster, lends itself to applications in remote and harsh environments around the world where suitable gravel sources for road works are often hard to come by, and other crushing methods are uneconomical or outdated. The new mine development by BHP at Cannington in outback Queensland is just one of many to recently use the Broons Rockbuster.

In addition to their work at home, Broons have not been idle on the world scene. "We've been manufacturing our Rockbuster at home for many years, and in South Africa since the mid 1980's", said Mr. Bowes, "...... a recent delivery in Norway has opened a window of opportunity to expand into the EEC market and beyond. The influx of foreign aid into the former Soviet Block countries and the rebuilding of infrastructure in those regions is an untapped market for our highly productive Rockbuster."

"With a spate of strong enquires in the USA and Canada, it won't be long before we see the Aussie Rockbuster cracking the North American market.." said Mr. Bowes, "A region long considered the sole domain of the big US Manufacturers".

"AUSSIE ROCKBUSTER BECOMES THE RUBBISHBUSTER IN NORWAY"

Over 25 years of development throughout Australia and Overseas has laid a solid foundation for Adelaide based Broons Hire (SA) Pty Ltd to expand into the EEC market with their revolutionary BH-1220 Rockbuster mobile rock crusher, earning valuable export dollars for the Australian economy.

Recently loaded aboard the M.V. Berlin Express, the Rockbuster bound for Norway, is to be put to use crushing of all things, refuse!

"We've always considered Greater Europe and Scandinavia as having opportunities for our Rockbuster", said Broons Hire founder, Graham Bowes, "....however, we never considered using the machine to process industrial refuse."

"Since our original discussions with the Norwegian firm, Oedegaard Avfallsdeponi, we've now had several enquiries for similar applications here in Australia so it looks as though we may have stumbled across a new market".

A tried an proven design in the Australian Outback, the Broons BH-1220 Rockbuster is a portable engine driven hammermill crusher. Powered by a reliable Caterpillar 3306TA diesel engine, the highly portable Rockbuster can be crushing within 2 minutes of arriving on site, producing around 100m3 of crushed rock per hour suitable for sub-base and basecourse layers in road construction.

Infeed rocks up to 500mm diameter are quickly reduced to 40mm minus well graded crushed rock simply by towing the Rockbuster along a windrow at around 0.5kph. By operating above the pavement, the Rockbuster has no detrimental affect on the surface over which the material to be crushed is spread.

Independent costings across a range of material types indicate the Rockbuster to be as much as 40% cheaper on some projects making it a viable alternative to conventional "in-pit" crushers, the majority of which are manufactured offshore. "The only machine capable of performing a similar task is made in Italy and costs over 3 times that of the BH-1220 Rockbuster, " said a delighted Mr. Bowes.

"The Norwegians were visably impressed with the highly effective operation of our unique Rockbuster and quality of the equipment emanating from our manufacturing facility. In contrast to many overseas nations, they found our 'Australian' business ethic to their liking, in particular our honesty and integrity in all dealings".

"As a family business it has been important we insulate ourselves from any regional economic downturn in order to protect our firm and the people that worked with us. Long before the South Australian economy took a significant nose dive in the late 80's and early 90's, we began investigating opportunities for our equipment both interstate and overseas in order to remain viable and maintain our base in Adelaide", remarked Mr. Bowes

"Our first Rockbuster was exported to South Africa in 1983 and from there another 17 machines have been put into operation throughout the Republic. Even more unique, our "Square" Impact Roller used in the compaction of poorly filled sites and major earthworks projects, has seen use on the English Chunnel project, the new Chek Lap Kok airport in Hong Kong and various other ventures throughout the USA and New Zealand."

The Rockbuster is only one of a list of innovative earthmoving machines emerging from the Broons stable, including their unique BH-1300 "Square" Impact Roller and BH-1830 Combination Roller.
